Instagram’s 24-hour DM rule: how shops can stay inside it
If you have used any tool for Instagram DMs, you have met the “24 hours”. Meta sets how long after a customer’s message a business may message them through the official route, and a shop that does not know the rule either answers customers too late or later finds messages that will not send.
This article explains in plain words what the window is, what opens or renews it, what you can do afterwards and how a shop can fit its work into that time. For ready wording, see 30 ready-made DM replies.
What exactly is the 24-hour window?
Under Meta’s messaging rules, when a customer messages your page a standard 24-hour window opens. Inside it you can reply through the official route, and the message may even be promotional.
The window starts from the customer’s action, not yours. A page cannot message anyone whenever it likes; the customer has to message first.
What opens and closes the window?
The customer messages you
The window opens. A story reply is also a DM and opens it; see the story reply guide.
The customer messages again
The 24 hours count again from their latest message. Every new customer message renews it.
You reply
Your reply does not extend the window. Only a customer message restarts the count.
24 hours pass
Standard sending ends. Until the customer messages again, an ordinary message from the page does not reach them.
What happens after 24 hours?
After the window Meta leaves only limited routes. One is the “Human Agent” tag, which allows a manual reply from a person for up to 7 days and must not be promotional. Whether that route is available depends on the permissions of each tool, so do not count on it.
Automatic messages from a bot or rule are allowed only inside those 24 hours. So the best plan is to answer within the window, not to look for a way around it.
How can a shop finish the job in 24 hours?
Put the important facts in the first reply
Write the price, stock you are sure about, shipping time and product link up front so the customer does not have to come back several times.
Keep the customer with a closed question
Instead of “any other questions?”, ask “shall I hold size 42 for you?”. A short answer from the customer opens the window again.
Move the purchase to your site
Payment and address belong on the site, not in the chat. A cart link in the DM can close the sale inside the same window. Product showcase in DMs.
How does shagerdAi see this rule?
Instagram itself enforces the window, and a send outside it can be refused by Instagram. The fee for each message is deducted only when Instagram accepts the send, so a message that did not go out does not reduce your wallet.
For now shagerdAi does not send automatic follow-ups to quiet customers. Replies come either from rules you wrote or from you in the panel. Take the 24-hour limit seriously in your own team planning.
Q&A
When does the 24 hours start?
From the customer’s latest message. Each new message from them makes the window a full 24 hours again.
Does replying make the window longer?
No. Only a customer message restarts the count.
Can nothing be sent after 24 hours?
Not an ordinary message. Limited routes such as the Human Agent tag exist for manual replies, but they depend on your tool’s permissions and are not for promotions.
Does this rule apply to comments too?
A private reply to a comment has its own rule. In shagerdAi that message is sent only after admin confirmation; see [comment management](/articles/instagram-comment-management).
